Hi all,

We’re migrating our SailPoint ISC VM to a new Red Hat OpenShift (KubeVirt) platform, and the migration/conversion step is failing because virt-v2v can’t detect the source guest OS.

Error:

virt-v2v: error: inspection could not detect the source guest
(or physical machine) operating system
Inspection field i_distro was unknown

Environment:

  • Target Platform: Red Hat OpenShift (KubeVirt)
  • Migration Utility: virt-v2v / KubeVirt migration workflow
  • Source VM OS/version: [insert e.g. RHEL 7.9, Windows Server 2019]

We’ve already raised this with SailPoint Support but haven’t gotten a response yet, so I’m hoping someone in the community has run into this before.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone successfully deployed or migrated VM onto OpenShift/KubeVirt? Is there an officially supported image (ISO/OVA/KVM/QCOW2), or does everyone build their own from scratch?
  2. For those who hit this same virt-v2v OS-detection error — what did you do to resolve it? (e.g., manually specifying the guest OS with virt-v2v’s -i or --root options, updating guest OS metadata, or converting via an intermediate format first)
  3. Any general lessons learned or gotchas moving existing VM from a traditional VM/hypervisor setup to OpenShift Virtualization?

Happy to share our full migration log if it’s useful for debugging. Any pointers, docs, or war stories appreciated — this is currently blocking our platform migration.
