Enhancement: Modernized Navigation Bar Experience for ISC and DAS

Description

We’re excited to announce a modernization of our navigation bar experience. End users will notice a few small tweaks while Admins will see more dynamic changes. The overall organizational structure remains the same, but especially for admins, our goal has been to make navigation more efficient.

Identity Security Cloud

Admin Experience

The biggest change is the introduction of a “megamenu” under the Admin tab. This means a decrease in load time for the Admin menu and an immediate, at-a-glance view of all menu and submenu items.

You’ll also notice we applied your branding colors for the tenant top level entries in the megamenu, for the + button in the main menu bar (see next paragraph), and as an ever-present line at the top of the main menu bar.

New megamenu and nav bar for admins

The + button in the main menu bar is a quick-access “Add/Create” menu. Different admins (like source, role, and full org admins) will see different options here, depending on their access rights, but the idea is to support easy navigation to the Create page for several commonly created objects.

End User Experience

Non-admin users will primarily notice a font change and updated icons. We have replaced the “Home” word in the top menu with a home icon, and changed the account menu at the far right from the user’s name to a person icon. (Hovering on that icon shows the logged-in user’s name and email address, so people using multiple accounts for testing in pre-prod orgs can still quickly validate which account they are using.)

Note: End users will not see the + create menu unless/until a feature is added there that they have permission to use.

Data Access Security

User Experience

Matching ISC, users will notice a few small enhancements in Data Access Security. Users will primarily notice a font change and updated icons. We have changed the account menu at the far right from the user’s name to a person icon. Hovering on that icon shows the logged-in user’s name and email address.

Up Next

Expect these fast-follow enhancements to this release.

  1. First, we’re updating our “takeover” pages so they will leave the main menu and top color bar showing at all times. This has been a common request from admin users for various reasons, such as wanting constant visibility to which environment they are working in (signified by colors) and being able to open new tabs showing different pages without having to close out of a pending action. We expect to be able to release that addition within a few weeks.
  2. Second, we will soon be using the + button / create menu in ISC for more things. First up will be for our Machine Identity Security customers, who will soon be getting a Create Machine Account option.

Stay tuned!

Looking forward to seeing this, looks like it will make navigation more efficient and may reduce the gazillion tabs that I always seem to end up with, despite trying to organise them into spaces/groups!

And what if those remaining tabs had better context of what was on the page?

Shameless plug, but if you want to see more information than just the tenant name on your tabs, go check out GOV-I-2310 on the ideas board

ETA: My linked idea turned 3 years old just 10 days ago! I feel like such a deadbeat dad for not having a party

Now lets get a proper dark mode

Is there any way to differentiate the Categories better in the MegaMenu? It appears that there are 2 columns with multiple categories, but the second ones seem to blend in.

Will the existing blue menu bar be going away for admins with this new change?

Yes, this completely replaces the existing thick menu bar under Admin.

There are still some other places in our UI (like on the Home page where you have My SailPoint and Launchpad) where you will still see the thick blue (or otherwise colored) bar.

There are some longer term plans to rethink the categories and groupings under this menu that may help with there being more than one category per column, but that is not yet planned.

Would it be possible to shade the background, or make the font size slightly larger for the Categories so they differentiate better from the menu options?

I like the font change, and the animation on clicking the + icon.

I was hopeful this change would improve the process to show the menu bar when you are in a role or identity etc. and still have the menu bar available. If you have one of these open, you have to back out in order to get back to the menu options. Very counterproductive.

This enhancement is coming in the next few weeks. See the “Up Next” section at the end of the announcement  .

I am playing with the Mega Menu in sandbox, and there is a lot to be desired. As someone that constantly uses the overview page, the single click on the admin menu to get there is an un-welcomed addition. That extra click is just enough to be a nuisance during daily monitoring and work.

I also find the mega menu to feel more cluttered than the old menu. when I open it I am barraged with every possible option and my ADHD brain has trouble focusing in on exactly what I am trying to find. It is providing a poor user experience for myself.

I am not saying that some people may not enjoy a mega menu, but at least give people like me who have an issue with 42 different menu options the opportunity to opt out via the global settings. There is a reason why I always order the same menu item at a Chinese restaurant (Gen. Tso’s Chicken for those who are wondering).

I am also curious if this was an in-demand feature request as there are other QoL, non-functional, items that could have been worked on. To quote @Crimson3708

Dark mode is a feature that I have been waiting a long while for. In regards of the old menu: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

I have to agree with the Mega Menu being great for some, and not so great for others.
Me being in the ‘other’ category.
I realize that not everything can be tailored to everybody; is it really that difficult to give us choices?

Agreed with others here. The priority for us was to get the nav back on all pages, not megamenu.

I have to say, that there seems to have been a lot of work put into this, but I am not personally a fan. I have also heard several grunts and groans from my team as well as the testers and end users in our development environment. If this is any indicator in how our larger user base will react, this will not be good.

Love the new menu bar setup UI. Looks impressive.

I do think it is a right step to make the navigation of admin ui smooth but to me it looks like too many navigation links are presented when clicking on the admin button and requires more scanning. May be i am old fashioned where i feel having a selectable drop down list is better than displaying all available options on a single page.

I am also thinking about the situation where we want to scale the admin-level navigation, then this single-page approach may become overcrowded and harder to navigate. It could potentially turn into a long list of links, making the user experience less focused and more time-consuming.
But I do think it is right step and may be we will get used to this new megamenu.

Thank You.
Regards
Vikas.

I’d also like to point out that unless you have the browser window opened to full screen, the menu doesn’t scale correctly and instead drops items off as they are ‘off screen’. Which appears to be an ongoing issue with the SailPoint GUI.

I agree with both of @gmilunich’s suggestions. There needs to be better contrast to differentiate categories.
