Web Services Connector - API Token cannot be accessed using $application.accesstoken$

We are setting up a new Web Services Connector with auth type “API Token”. However, we are not able to use the API token using $application.accesstoken$ for Test Connection (or any other HTTP operation)

  However, Test Connection works when the API token is hard coded in Value field above

• What errors did you face (share screenshots)?
