ServiceNow Catalog Integration Questions - Workflow versus Flow Design in ServiceNow

At the moment there is no official confirmation that this is happening, but there is discussions around ServiceNow using Flow Designer compared to Workflow when it comes to how SN functions. In other words, there may be a chance that Workflows are deprecated in the future as ServiceNow is pushing Admins to convert current workflows into flow designer and to use flow designer moving forward for any new work.

When implementing this in SailPoint, we have noticed a lot of the setup uses Workflows explicitly, and one of the workflows that seemed to come in at time of integration is one that has a ton of steps within the workflow itself.

The concerning part here is, if SN does go the route of deprecating workflows, we worry about having to convert such workflows that come from the SailPoint integration side of things – especially since we are not the ones that created them.

If you all have any insight into this, it would be appreciated!

Hi Shane,
Thank you for the post. As of now the latest version for Service Catalogue is 3.1. If there is any update, Sailpoint team will be communicating the same. You may also visit the SAAS Update page to get the latest details regaridng any features that gets released.

Thanks

I personally have a hard time believing they will be able to deprecate workflows, as there are so many companies out there who have implemented thousands of them. Unless they provided some sort of conversion tool and a multi-year wind down.

Now, would they possibly prevent you from creating new ones? Maybe.

Maybe I’m just a dinosaur, but I prefer using workflows over flows. My main problem is if you just want to do something like run a simple script, the work-up to do so is much more involved, and you have to even build a ‘run script’ action to re-use, which is annoying.

All that to be said, it wouldn’t be very difficult for the team to rewrite the current workflow into a flow, as it’s just a single workflow.

Thank you for your reply and guidance!

Thank you for your clarification! I was not aware of the differences between Workflow and Flow Designer and I would have to say what you mention makes sense. I will let our ServiceNow admins know.

Thanks again!
