Using Profile Select options in a Set Attribute workflow action

Hey Docs Team,

F. another profiles value: select the appropriate values within each field

  • What profile
  • From what Attribute

It says the above, but I can’t select a profile. It seems I can only select a profile type here? But since multiple profiles can have the same profile type. How does NERM know from which profile of that given profile type to take the given attribute? I think I am missing a piece of the puzzle, perhaps this can be added to the documentation?

Hey @angelo_mekenkamp! It’s good to hear from you. I’ve created a ticket (SAASDOCS-12287) to look into this and I’ll get back to you as soon as I have an update. Thanks for your question!

@angelo_mekenkamp Let’s start by double-checking that in your Set as field, you have “another profile’s value” selected. Let me know what you find out. Thanks again!

Edited: The “What profile” field displays a list of profile search/select attributes - these are very often named after profile types.

Hey @rebekah_reveile, please see the screenshot here.
Notice that there is plenty of whitespace on the right side of my screen, but the text is still cut-off, and I don’t see a way to drag it to show more. But yes, it does say “another profile’s value”.

I’m bringing in @ZackTarantino-Woolson , one of the developers for this product and one of my favorite developers in general  Zack, can you help Angelo get this workflow action sorted out?

Edited: I’ll also spin this into a separate topic. We can still update the docs based on the results of this discussion.

Hello  Couple questions:

  1. What is the end goal you are trying to achieve?
  2. What kind of workflow is this?

The options present in “What Profile” are all of the Profile Select / Search attributes in the system. Profile Select / Profile Search attributes hold Profiles as values. For example, in the Quickstart NERM baseline, when an Assignment is created, the “Person” that assignment was created for is stored in a Profile Select usually labeled “Person” or “Non-Employee”.

So, if you want to pull a value out of that Person profile, You would choose the “Person” Profile Select for “What Profile”.

Super! So this additional context is missing from the documentation. Based on the documentation (and the fieldname), it would seem that the “Profile” dropdown is not providing profile select or profile search attributes, but is a dropdown of actual profile attributes.
I thought perhaps we could obtain a profile attribute value by specifying:
Profile type, the profile itself, the attribute name, allowing us to statically refer to any profile, perhaps using variables to make it more dynamical. But was then confused there were only two fields.

The goal for me was to understand an existing workflow, where I saw it mentioned:
Profile: Person
Attribute: Email
So then I thought it knows to take the email from a profile with profile type Person, but did not know how the system would know which Person to take the email from.
But since the chosen value “Person” is not referring to the profile type, but it instead referring to a profile select or profile search attribute, which under the hood already had a one to one connection to a particular Person, it does make sense NERM knows which Person it is.

I hope this properly describes the misunderstanding I had based on the documentation and UI screenshot and it can get slightly updated for the next people. For me it is clear now. Thank you both!

Kind regards,
Angelo

Hey @angelo_mekenkamp! I’ve made some updates to the documentation based on your feedback and Zack’s answers. Thank you to you both!

Looks good. Thank you!
