SP-config roadmap for devops

I spoke with @derek_putnam about this at Navigate today.

We’d like be able to move updated Source configuration between environments with the sp-config API. It works well for updating things like transforms, but not for objects like Sources that have configuration that may be different between environments. So it’s great for pushing new Sources to a new environment, but not for moving updates. For example, we may have modified the schema in sandbox and want to automate moving that change to Production. However, the Production Source may have Create Profile mapping that’s different between sandbox and production. If we migrate it with sp-config, we’ll get he new schema updates but we’ll also overwrite our production-specific Create Profile mapping. That makes it unusable for migrating Source updates.

Is there anything on the roadmap that would allow substitution variables or other configuration that would make an automated migration process more context sensitive?

Hey @david_cline this is a good point. I’ve reached out to our product team on this one and will see what they have to say.

We do have on our roadmap for 2023 a plan to build a comprehensive platform solution for configuration handling, as well as supporting all objects configuration. This is currently in discovery, but, the vision is to have:
a user friendly UI as well as services that can be automated for smoother and faster promotion of configuration between environments such as sandbox/staging to production (while retaining the environment specific information), cloning of configurations to new environments, versioning and possibly config versions compare and more.

Realizing this is an old thread, but bumping it up to see if this topic has made it out of discovery phase?

I am eagerly anticipating progress and positive developments on this matter.

Hi Nathaniel, we are actually in development phase for the Configuration Hub “promote” use case which will enable migration identityNow configuration between tenants, to be Limited available by end of Q3. We are recruiting customers for Beta of the first phase which will be available for Limited customers in July (managing configs within same tenant - backup & restore use case). If you do want to participate in the Closed Preview which is available now (In your Sandbox / pre-prod environment), please submit this form:
