New Capability: Data Access Security File Shares & NAS Storage Governance

Description

:bangbang: We are excited to announce the release of new Data Access Security connectors for File Shares and NAS devices, that extend Data Access Security governance capabilities to additional on-premises File Shares and NAS Device endpoints.

The new connector extends Data Access Security’s Resource Discovery, Data Classification, and Permission Analysis capabilities to On-Premises File Shares and NAS Devices including:

  • Windows File Servers
  • NetApp - OnTap On-Prem and Cloud
  • EMC Unity (formerly EMC Celera, VNX)
  • and EMC PowerScale (formerly EMC Isilon)

The new capabilities deliver enhanced visibility, and effective governance of data assets hosted in customer data centers and virtual private cloud environments.

Administrators, Data Owners, Compliance Managers, and other business stakeholders can now leverage Data Access Security to gain insights into their data and govern access to sensitive resources holistically. This applies across cloud and on-premises enterprise applications, all through a unified view.

New Capabilities

  • Resource discovery – Discover unstructured data assets hosted anywhere on the Windows File Servers, and NetApp and EMC NAS devices. Map how data is distributed across distributed and clustered environments in data centers and virtual private clouds.

  • Data Classification – Classify and catalog sensitive data hosted on File Shares and NAS devices – including regulated information that needs to comply with regulatory requirements, or crown jewels and intellectual property that may be overly shared through the SharePoint collaboration portals.

  • Permission Analysis - Gain granular visibility into identities access to sensitive data assets. Visualize access paths of internal and external, known and unknown accounts to assets hosted on File Shares and NAS devices, as well as leverage detailed forensics views for fine-grained analysis of access rights.

  • Pre-Reqs and Connectivity Validation - Easily validate that access and connectivity requirements are met with the click of a button, ensuring successful application onboarding while saving time and avoiding unnecessary settings changes. Receive immediate feedback on configuration validations and recommendations for remediating incorrect settings.

  • Reporting - Leverage automated and scheduled, out-of-the-box reporting capabilities to provide detailed insights on data assets, data classification distribution, permission analysis, and ad-hoc reports for customized, focused insights.

  • Holistic Governance - Additional coverage for File Shares and NAS Devices, enables organizations to extend their governance reach and take advantage of DAS holistic governance capabilities including Access Certification, Ownership assignment, and sharing data access insights with Identity Security Cloud.

Problem

Most organizations still store a significant part of their critical enterprise data on various file shares and storage systems, hosted in data centers on their premises, or virtual cloud environment. They need to extend the same governance processes and controls they have on cloud applications, in order to protect data and ensure appropriate access is maintained. Windows, NetApp (OnTap both On-Prem and Cloud), EMC Powerscale (Isilon), and Unity (Celera) NAS devices are among the most commonly used solutions, servicing the world’s largest organizations.

Solution

Extend Data Access Security governance capabilities to on-premises File Shares and NAS devices, delivering the same breadth of capabilities across cloud applications and on-premises solution. With the extended coverage, Data Access Security delivers a truly holistic governance solution, that encompass enterprises entire data landscape, on-prem and cloud - through a single pane of glass.

Supported Versions

  • Windows File Server - 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025
  • EMC Powerscale (Isilon) - OneFS 7.1 and above
  • EMC Unity (Celera) - 4.0.0 and above

Who is affected?

  • All existing Data Access Security customers across all regions.
  • All ISC customers looking to govern identities and entitlements access to critical information and sensitive data assets, whether they are hosted on cloud application or on-premises file shares and storage.
  • File Access Manager customers looking to migrate to Identity Security Cloud.

Additional Resources

The Data Access Security SharePoint connector requires Virtual Appliance clusters to perform on-premises data collection. Please follow the instructions detailed in the Connector Documentation.
