Is there a way to skip the default correlation config?

I have a correlation rule that will link the account to the proper identity and return a blank map if it does not, however the default correlation always runs regardless. Is there a way to bypass that effectively?

Unfortunately, there is not currently a way to disable the default correlation rule. There is an idea for this feature in SailPoint Ideas you can vote for: Make it possible to disable the default | SailPoint Ideas Portal

Your best bet right now would be to try and come up with a workaround: try and correlate accounts prior to the default correlation getting invoked, change your ‘Account Name’ attribute to something else that avoids this correlation, a more drastic option is to change your identity displayName to something else.

Not great answers I know, but this is a fairly common complaint from folks.
