Application Role Not Found Error (?)

I did a search on this error but didn’t find anything. I recived the following error for 7 access requests. The access item in question is AD joined and there were no issues with AD reported that day.

An unexpected error occurred: Application role for Access Profile ‘Grotto - Front Desk’ not found, as it has not been added to any Access Applications, preventing approval by Application Owners

We have fixed the issue by simply resubmitting the access requests, but I am trying to determine what may have caused this issue and how to avoid it happening in the future.

by any chance on that day

access profile is present but not associated with any application role
is application role missing from the Access Applications section ?

  • Please share or check Audit Events for Access Profile changes
  • Please share or check Debug Logs for the specific access request ID around the time of failure

The approval chain was misconfigured to require the APP Owners approval. There is no app or app owner associated with the access item in question. After this happened with a second user, we audited the access item being requested and found the error. This appears to have cleared up the issue.
When looking at the wording of the error “Application role…not found” it makes sense, as the item in question was never associated with an application.
